May 2010

                       News from ASPE Society

The Boston Chapter Board of Directors has been informed that everyone should have received his or her new copy of Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook Volume 1.  VP Technical Bill Hughes CPD, LEED AP,   has requested that you read the special dedication   …” in memory of John Norman Parks CET, CPD.  As I have said before this is a small token of our appreciation for a man that was dedicated and had a great love for this Society.”

We depend on each other to make this professional society work.   You may not have known Norman Parks, but you certainly where impacted by his efforts in maintaining the organization.

Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook updates:

There is a need for a person to chair the next revision of Volume 1.  The schedule for this next update is 4 years from now.  It does at first appear to be early for this request but we need to get out in front of the issues.

The Technical & Research Committee along with the Volume 2 Chairman Jim Rogers CPD are currently reviewing Volume 2, all but one of the first drafts of the chapters has been submitted, and the committee has completed reviewing almost all of the first drafts that have been submitted.  The committee is also currently reviewing some of the revised chapters to be finalized before being indexed. Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook Volume 2 has a scheduled delivery date to the membership in January 2011.

The Technical & Research Committee has also started reviewing the first draft of chapters of Plumbing Engineering Design Handbook Volume 3.

Luther Ellis has volunteered as Chairman of Volume 4.  Luther is in the process of looking for authors of the various chapters so if you are interested in working on any chapter of this book please do not hesitate to contact Bill Hughes,CPD.

 Technical Publications Updates:

The following is an update of the publications that are currently in development or in the planning stages.

The Pumps and Pumping Systems Handbook has run into a roadblock the people that were interested in rewriting the book have decided not to take on the project.  If you know of someone or if you are interested in the rewrite of the book please contact Bill Hughes, CPD.
Water Reuse and Reclaim Water Handbook is currently well under way.
ASPE Plumbing Code Engineering Design Manual is in final layout with delivery scheduled before the convention.
Site Utilities Handbook for Plumbing Engineers Tim Smith has volunteered to work on the publication.
Hunter Papers softbound book of Hunters original papers is currently in layout hopefully will be ready for sale by early this summer.
The ASPE Jargon of Plumbing is currently being reviewed by a group of plumbing engineers. This book is also planned for sale by early this summer.
User-friendly CD of Excel spreadsheets to complement the ASPE Tables Book is also being developed and it will be ready for sale by early this summer.
Other potential topics that I am still seeking author(s) for are:
High -Rise Plumbing Book
How to use the new Tables Book
Hospitals and Health Care Facilities and Design Handbook Self-Contained Buildings

If you know of some that wants to be involved in the production of any of these publications, please have them contact:
Bill Hughes at  aspeatl@aspe.org or bhughes@rgb.net

April Technical

The technical topic for the April meeting was on High Purity Piping.  I want to thank our very own Paul Galvin for the very informative presentation.    The presentation was a great overview of the system types and materials that are commonly used.   I have been trying to put highlights of the speaker’s presentation in the newsletter however Paul has generously offered to put his presentation on the website.   Once the details have been worked out we will let you know the exact location.

May Technical Topic & Speaker

The May technical meeting will feature Mr. Bill Brady, PE, CPD, LEED AP.  Bill is an active chapter member and a past president of the chapter.  Bill will give us a presentation on Pools, Spas and Fountains.  Bill has designed over 100 pools and spas, including fountains at the Venetian Casino and Resort in Las Vegas.  If you already do not know Bill, he has many stories and anecdotes to share.
In closing, I want to emphasis how the monthly meetings are a great way to learn something new, sharpen your knowledge of what you already learned, and a great opportunity to network.
I certainly hope to see you at the next meeting.

By Rich Dean, CPD, V.P. Technical
